A silver-mining town in a volcanic caldera
Banská Štiavnica was once one of the richest silver-mining towns in the Kingdom of Hungary, and its Renaissance houses, churches and two castles are scattered across the slopes of an old volcanic caldera. The town and its mining heritage are a UNESCO site. Visit the Old Castle and New Castle, the baroque Calvary on a nearby hill and the open-air mining museum, and swim in the tajchy, artificial lakes built to power the mines.
