High Tatras

The Alps in miniature on the Polish border

The High Tatras are a compact range of sharp granite peaks along Slovakia's border with Poland, the highest in the Carpathians. The resort villages of Štrbské Pleso, Starý Smokovec and Tatranská Lomnica give access to marked trails, mountain huts and glacial lakes such as Popradské pleso. A cable car climbs towards Lomnický štít for sweeping views. Winter brings skiing, and nearby Slovak Paradise has gorges climbed by ladders and chains.
