A compact capital on the Danube
Bratislava is a compact capital on the Danube, just an hour from Vienna. Its old town is a tangle of pastel streets, cafés and quirky bronze statues, anchored by St Martin's Cathedral, where Hungarian kings were once crowned. The square Bratislava Castle overlooks the river, and the UFO bridge has a viewing deck on its pylon. The ruins of Devín Castle stand on a cliff where the Morava meets the Danube, and the Small Carpathian wine villages are close by.
