Surf and sunsets on the Pacific
El Tunco is the best-known of the surf towns along El Salvador's coast, named after a pig-shaped rock just offshore. The beach is dark volcanic sand, and the waves are consistent for much of the year, with long right-hand point breaks at El Sunzal and, further along, the famous break at Punta Roca in La Libertad. Surf schools cater to beginners, sunsets are spectacular, and the town has a lively bar scene. Quieter beaches such as El Zonte lie a short drive along the coast.
