A capital in the shadow of a volcano
San Salvador sits in the Valley of the Hammocks beneath the San Salvador Volcano, whose crater, El Boquerón, can be walked around in a national park on the city's edge. The historic centre has been restored, with the Metropolitan Cathedral, where Archbishop Óscar Romero is buried, the National Palace and the striking modernist Iglesia El Rosario, lit by coloured glass. The Joya de Cerén archaeological site, a Maya village preserved in volcanic ash, lies just outside the city, and pupusas are sold everywhere.
