Kosovo

Ottoman mosques, Serbian monasteries and mountains near every town.

Kosovo is a young, landlocked Balkan territory whose independence is recognised by many but not all countries. Prizren is the prettiest town, with an Ottoman stone bridge, mosques and a hilltop fortress, while the Visoki Dečani and Peć Patriarchate monasteries are UNESCO-listed medieval treasures. Pristina is a lively, youthful capital, and the Rugova Gorge near Peja is a base for hiking and via ferrata.

It is a sociable, good-value place with a strong café culture, flija (layered pancake), grilled meats and warm hospitality. Buses link the main towns, and a car helps in the mountains. Check your government's travel advice for the northern border areas. May, June and September are the most pleasant months; winters are cold.
