The sacred island of the Incas on Lake Titicaca
Isla del Sol, on the Bolivian side of Lake Titicaca, was considered by the Incas the birthplace of the sun. There are no cars: stone paths and terraces link small villages, Inca ruins such as Pilko Kaina, and the sacred rock at the north end. Stay the night to see the sun set over the lake and the snowy Cordillera Real. The boats leave from Copacabana, a lakeside town known for its white Moorish-style basilica and the Virgin of Copacabana, and for grilled trout from the lake.
