A city in a canyon high in the Andes
La Paz pours down the sides of a canyon below the altiplano, with the snowy peak of Illimani behind it, and at around 3,600 metres it is the highest seat of government in the world. The Mi Teleférico cable car network links the city with El Alto above, giving stunning rides. Cholitas in bowler hats and layered skirts run the markets, including the Witches' Market with its herbs and charms. Day trips go to the Valle de la Luna, the ruins of Tiwanaku, and, for mountain bikers, the old road to Coroico.
