Volcano views in Chile's Lake District
Puerto Varas sits on Lake Llanquihue, settled by German immigrants in the 19th century, whose shingled houses and kuchen cakes remain. Across the water rises the perfect cone of the Osorno volcano. Nearby, Vicente Pérez Rosales National Park has the Petrohué waterfalls, and Lago Todos los Santos, the start of a lake crossing into Argentina towards Bariloche. The area is good for rafting, kayaking and climbing Osorno's slopes. Chiloé and the Carretera Austral are both reachable from nearby Puerto Montt.
