Painted hills, funiculars and street art by the Pacific
Valparaíso climbs from its port up dozens of hills, with houses clad in painted corrugated iron and walls covered in murals. Its historic quarter is a UNESCO World Heritage site. Old funiculars, the ascensores, haul people up to Cerro Alegre and Cerro Concepción, the prettiest hills for wandering, cafés and viewpoints. Pablo Neruda's house La Sebastiana looks over the bay. Viña del Mar, next door, has the beaches, and the Casablanca Valley's white wine is on the way from Santiago.
