Hans Christian Andersen's fairy-tale home town
Odense is one of Denmark's oldest cities and the place where Hans Christian Andersen was born. His museum, set in gardens around his childhood neighbourhood, brings the tales to life for adults and children alike, and the cobbled lanes of the old quarter still look the part. Beyond Andersen there is Den Fynske Landsby, an open-air village museum, and the gentle island of Funen around the city, dotted with manor houses such as Egeskov Castle.
