Wine country's elegant river port
Bordeaux's honey-coloured stone facades line the Garonne in a long, graceful curve, and much of the centre is a UNESCO World Heritage Site. The Place de la Bourse and its Miroir d'eau reflecting pool are the city's signature. Wine is the reason many come: La Cité du Vin explains it, and the châteaux of the Médoc, Pessac-Léognan and Saint-Émilion are a short drive away. The Atlantic beaches and the Dune du Pilat, Europe's tallest sand dune, are also within reach.
