Riviera light, Italian flavours and a pebble bay
Nice sits on the curve of the Baie des Anges, with the Promenade des Anglais running along its pebble beach and the tangled lanes of Vieux Nice behind. The city was part of the House of Savoy until 1860, and it still tastes Italian: socca chickpea pancakes, pissaladière and the market on the Cours Saleya. Matisse and Chagall both have museums here. Trains and buses along the coast make easy day trips to Monaco, Villefranche, Èze and Antibes.
