The ancient oracle on the slopes of Parnassus
The ancient Greeks considered Delphi the centre of the world, and pilgrims came from across the Mediterranean to consult the oracle of Apollo. The sanctuary climbs the slopes of Mount Parnassus, from the Temple of Apollo to a theatre and a stadium high above, with a sea of olive trees stretching below. The site museum holds the bronze Charioteer of Delphi. It is an easy day trip from Athens, though staying overnight lets you see it in the quiet morning light.
