Monasteries perched on towering rock pillars
Meteora is one of Greece's most extraordinary sights: huge pillars of rock rising above the town of Kalambaka, with monasteries built on their summits. Monks began settling here in the 14th century, hauling materials up with ropes and nets. Six monasteries are still active and open to visitors, including the Great Meteoron and Varlaam, with frescoed chapels and dizzying views. Dress modestly, and walk the old footpaths between them or catch the light at sunset.
