White villages on the rim of a drowned volcano
Santorini is the rim of a volcano that collapsed into the sea, leaving towering cliffs around a flooded caldera. Fira and Oia spill down the edge in cascades of white houses and blue domes, and Oia's sunset is one of the most photographed in the world. Beyond the views, visit the Bronze Age town of Akrotiri, buried by an eruption, swim at the black and red sand beaches and taste crisp Assyrtiko wines grown in the volcanic soil.
