Reggae's capital beneath the Blue Mountains
Kingston is the cultural heart of Jamaica and the city that gave the world reggae, ska and dancehall. The Bob Marley Museum occupies his former home and studio, and the National Gallery of Jamaica shows the island's art. Across the harbour, Port Royal was once a notorious pirate haven before an earthquake in 1692 sank much of it. Sound systems play in the streets on weekend nights. The Blue Mountains rise behind the city, where coffee is grown and Blue Mountain Peak is climbed before dawn for sunrise.
