Hot springs in the shadow of Mount Fuji
Around an hour and a half from Tokyo, Hakone is where the city comes to soak. The classic loop links a mountain railway, a cable car over the steaming Owakudani valley and a boat across Lake Ashi, with Fuji on the horizon when the clouds allow. Stay the night in a ryokan with its own onsen to see it at its best, after the day-trippers have gone.
