Subtropical beaches and Ryukyu culture
Okinawa was the independent Ryukyu Kingdom until the nineteenth century, and its culture, music and food still feel distinct from mainland Japan. Naha, the capital, has Shuri Castle and the lively Kokusai-dori. Around the main island and outlying groups such as the Kerama and Yaeyama islands, coral reefs offer excellent snorkelling and diving. The Churaumi Aquarium's whale sharks are a highlight in the north. Try goya champuru, Okinawa soba and awamori, and visit the peace memorials that recall the 1945 battle.
