Mount Fuji

Japan's sacred volcano and its lakeside views

Mount Fuji rises to 3,776 metres in an almost perfect cone, and it has been a sacred site and an artistic subject for centuries, which is why it is a UNESCO cultural site. The official climbing season runs through July and August, when hikers go up overnight to watch sunrise from the summit. The rest of the year, most visitors admire it from the Fuji Five Lakes, especially Kawaguchiko, or from the Chureito Pagoda above Fujiyoshida. Clear views are most likely on winter mornings.
