Durmitor National Park

Glacial lakes, peaks and a deep canyon

Durmitor National Park, a UNESCO site, is a wild high plateau in northern Montenegro, with limestone peaks, dozens of glacial lakes and dark pine forests. The small town of Žabljak is the base for hiking, including the easy loop around the Black Lake and tougher routes up Bobotov Kuk. The Tara River Canyon, one of the deepest in Europe, is famous for rafting and the high arched Đurđevića Tara Bridge. In winter it becomes a modest ski area.
