Desert elephants and ancient rock engravings
Damaraland is a rugged stretch of north-western Namibia, a landscape of flat-topped mountains, boulder fields and ephemeral rivers. Desert-adapted elephants and black rhinos survive here, tracked on foot or by vehicle from lodges run in partnership with local conservancies. Twyfelfontein, a UNESCO site, holds thousands of rock engravings of animals and footprints made by hunter-gatherers. The Brandberg, Namibia's highest mountain, is home to the White Lady painting, and the Petrified Forest has fossilised tree trunks.
