Swakopmund

German seaside architecture between desert and ocean

Swakopmund sits where the Namib Desert runs straight into the Atlantic, often wrapped in cool fog. Its streets are lined with German colonial buildings, including the Woermannhaus and the old railway station, and its bakeries and beer halls still show that influence. The town is Namibia's adventure base: sandboarding and quad biking on the dunes, living-desert tours to find chameleons and geckos, and kayaking among seals and dolphins at nearby Walvis Bay, where flamingos feed in the lagoon.
