A harbour city of volcanoes and islands
Auckland spreads across a narrow isthmus between two harbours, dotted with dozens of volcanic cones and nicknamed the City of Sails. Walk up Maungawhau (Mount Eden) for the view, take a ferry to the wineries and beaches of Waiheke Island, or drive west to the wild black sand of Piha. It's the country's biggest city and main arrival point.
