A fjord of sheer cliffs and waterfalls
Milford Sound, in Fiordland National Park, was carved by glaciers: sheer walls rise straight from the water, with Mitre Peak standing guard. A cruise out to the Tasman Sea passes seals, waterfalls and sometimes dolphins. Rain is frequent and spectacular, bringing temporary waterfalls pouring down every cliff, and the drive in from Te Anau is breathtaking in itself.
