Africa's roof, walkable all the way to the top
Kilimanjaro rises alone from the plains of northern Tanzania to 5,895 metres at Uhuru Peak, the highest point in Africa. No technical climbing is needed, but the altitude is serious, and most trekkers take six to eight days on routes such as Machame, Lemosho or Marangu to acclimatise. The climb passes through farmland, rainforest, heather moorland and alpine desert before the final night ascent to the crater rim and its glaciers. Moshi, at the mountain's foot, is the base for organising treks.
