Zanzibar

Spice island beaches and the lanes of Stone Town

Zanzibar's main island mixes history and beaches. Stone Town, its old quarter, is a tangle of alleys with brass-studded carved doors, the House of Wonders, the Old Fort and the former slave market site now marked by the Anglican cathedral. Each evening Forodhani Gardens fills with food stalls grilling seafood and making Zanzibar pizza. On the coast, Nungwi and Kendwa in the north have swimmable water at all tides, while Paje on the east coast is a kitesurfing hub. Spice tours show how cloves, nutmeg and vanilla are grown.
