Mana Pools National Park

Walking with elephants on the Zambezi floodplain

Mana Pools lies on the southern bank of the Zambezi in northern Zimbabwe, a floodplain of old oxbow lakes shaded by albida and mahogany trees. It is one of the few parks where walking without a vehicle, with a qualified guide, is part of the tradition, and elephants standing on their hind legs to reach albida pods are a famous sight. Canoe safaris drift past hippos and crocodiles on the river. The park is remote and reachable mainly in the dry season, which keeps visitor numbers low.
