The smoke that thunders on the Zambezi
Victoria Falls, known locally as Mosi-oa-Tunya, the smoke that thunders, is where the Zambezi drops over a basalt lip more than a kilometre and a half wide into a narrow chasm. From the Zimbabwean side, a rainforest trail leads past viewpoints facing most of the main falls, drenched in spray when the river is high. The town of Victoria Falls is a hub for adventure: white-water rafting below the falls, bungee jumps from the Victoria Falls Bridge, helicopter flights and sunset cruises on the upper Zambezi.
