Arcades, fountains and a relaxed Swiss capital
Bern's old town sits on a narrow peninsula in a loop of the River Aare, and its sandstone arcades, fountains and red roofs make it a UNESCO World Heritage Site. The Zytglogge clock tower has an astronomical clock with moving figures. Einstein lived here when he developed his theory of special relativity, and his apartment is a small museum. The Federal Palace houses the Swiss parliament, the Zentrum Paul Klee holds a large collection of the artist's work, and in summer locals float down the Aare. It is calm and unhurried.
