A perfect volcanic cone above rainforest and hot springs
Arenal Volcano's near-perfect cone rises above the town of La Fortuna, the base for Costa Rica's most popular adventure region. Trails cross old lava flows in Arenal Volcano National Park, a steep staircase leads down to the La Fortuna waterfall, and hanging bridges carry walkers through the rainforest canopy. Rivers heated by the volcano feed thermal spa resorts, perfect after a day of ziplining, rafting or canyoning. Lake Arenal stretches to the west, and sloths, toucans and coatis are common sights.
