Surf and sunsets in dry Guanacaste
Tamarindo is the best-known beach town in Guanacaste, the country's driest, sunniest region. The long beach has gentle waves ideal for learning to surf, and the town has plenty of surf schools, restaurants and bars. At nearby Playa Grande, leatherback turtles nest at night during the season, and the estuary is home to crocodiles and birds. The wider Guanacaste coast has quieter beaches such as Playa Flamingo and Playa Conchal, and the Nicoya Peninsula lies to the south.
