Canals, rainforest and nesting sea turtles
Tortuguero can only be reached by boat or small plane, and its network of jungle canals makes it feel like a small Amazon. Guided boat and canoe trips glide past caimans, river otters, monkeys and herons. The long beach is one of the most important nesting sites in the Western Hemisphere for green sea turtles, which come ashore at night from roughly July to October, watched on guided tours. The colourful village has a laid-back Afro-Caribbean character and a few simple places to eat.
