A town hall in the river and smoked beer
Bamberg escaped major damage in the Second World War, and its old town, spread across seven hills like Rome, is a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Its most striking building is the Old Town Hall, built on an island in the middle of the River Regnitz. The imperial cathedral holds the enigmatic Bamberger Reiter statue, and Little Venice is a row of fishermen's houses along the water. Bamberg is also a beer town, with several traditional breweries, and Rauchbier, a dark beer with a smoky flavour, is its signature.
