A walled medieval town frozen in time
Rothenburg ob der Tauber is the most famous stop on Germany's Romantic Road, a walled town that looks much as it did in the 16th century. You can walk the covered ramparts almost all the way around, and the Plönlein, a small square at a fork in the road, is one of Germany's most photographed spots. The Medieval Crime Museum is surprisingly engaging, and the night watchman's tour tells the town's history with humour. Try a Schneeball, the local pastry. Stay overnight to see it after the tour buses leave.
