Hamburg

A maritime city of canals and warehouses

Hamburg's identity is shaped by its harbour, one of the busiest in Europe. The Speicherstadt is a UNESCO-listed district of red-brick warehouses built on oak piles along canals, and next to it the Elbphilharmonie concert hall rises from an old warehouse in a wave of glass, with a public viewing plaza. Sunday mornings start at the Fischmarkt. The Reeperbahn in St Pauli is famous for its nightlife and for the clubs where the Beatles played in the early 1960s. The Alster lakes bring calm to the centre.
