Mughal monuments and old bazaars in the capital
Delhi has been rebuilt by one dynasty after another, and the layers show. Old Delhi centres on the Red Fort and the Jama Masjid, with Chandni Chowk's lanes selling spices, silver and parathas. To the south stand Humayun's Tomb, a forerunner of the Taj Mahal, and the soaring Qutub Minar. New Delhi, laid out by Edwin Lutyens, runs from India Gate up Kartavya Path to the presidential palace. The metro makes it all manageable, and the street food is some of the best in the country.
