Jodhpur

The blue city beneath a mighty fort

Jodhpur spreads beneath Mehrangarh, one of the largest forts in India, which rises sheer from a rock outcrop and holds richly decorated palace rooms and a fine museum. From the ramparts, the old city below is a patchwork of blue-painted houses. Down in the lanes, the clock tower and Sardar Market are the centre of trade, and Jaswant Thada, a white marble cenotaph, sits calmly nearby. Try mirchi vada and makhaniya lassi, and stay in a haveli with a rooftop view of the fort.
