Jökulsárlón

Icebergs drifting from glacier to sea

Jökulsárlón is a deep lagoon at the foot of Breiðamerkurjökull, an outlet of Vatnajökull, Europe's largest glacier by volume. Icebergs in shades of white and electric blue break off the glacier, drift across the water and slip out through a short channel to the sea, where chunks are stranded on the black sand of Diamond Beach. Seals often swim among them. Boat tours run on the lagoon in summer, and in winter guided trips visit ice caves in the glacier nearby.
