Craters, lava castles and steaming earth in the north
Lake Mývatn lies in an area of intense volcanic activity in the north of Iceland. Around its shores are the pseudocraters of Skútustaðir, the twisted lava pillars of Dimmuborgir and the Hverfjall tephra crater, while the Námafjall geothermal area bubbles with mud pots and sulphur vents. The Mývatn Nature Baths offer a quieter alternative to the Blue Lagoon. Goðafoss waterfall lies on the road from Akureyri, and Húsavík, one of Iceland's best whale-watching towns, is close by.
