Black sand, basalt columns and waterfalls
Vík í Mýrdal is the southernmost village in Iceland and the natural stop on a South Coast drive. Just west lies Reynisfjara, a black-sand beach with hexagonal basalt columns and the Reynisdrangar sea stacks offshore; its sneaker waves are genuinely dangerous, so keep well back. On the way from Reykjavík you pass Seljalandsfoss, which you can walk behind, and the broad curtain of Skógafoss, while the Dyrhólaey arch and the Sólheimajökull glacier are close by.
