Kenya

Savannah safaris, big migrations and a Swahili coast.

Kenya is one of Africa's classic safari countries. The Maasai Mara hosts the Great Migration of wildebeest and zebra, Amboseli offers elephants with Kilimanjaro as a backdrop, and Samburu and Tsavo add rugged, less-crowded landscapes. On the coast, Lamu's old town and the beaches of Diani and Watamu offer a very different pace, while Mount Kenya attracts trekkers.

Nairobi is a dynamic capital with a national park on its edge. Food ranges from nyama choma and ugali to Swahili coconut curries. Safari days start early and end with sundowners. July to October is peak time for the migration in the Mara, and January to February is also dry and excellent; the long rains fall around April and May.
