Amboseli National Park

Elephants beneath the snows of Kilimanjaro

Amboseli lies at the foot of Kilimanjaro on the Kenyan side of the border, and on clear mornings the mountain's snow-capped summit rises above the plains. Underground springs from the mountain feed swamps that draw large herds of elephants, including some famous big-tusked bulls, long studied by researchers here. Lions, cheetahs, buffalo, hippos and flamingos on seasonal Lake Amboseli complete the picture. Observation Hill gives a view across the whole park, and the surrounding Maasai lands have community-run lodges.
