Lions, open plains and the river crossings of the migration
The Masai Mara National Reserve spreads across rolling grassland in south-west Kenya, bordering Tanzania's Serengeti. From around July to October the great migration of wildebeest and zebra pours in, and herds plunge across the crocodile-filled Mara River in one of nature's great spectacles. The rest of the year the Mara is still superb for lions, cheetahs, leopards and elephants. Neighbouring private conservancies such as Naboisho and Olare Motorogi, run with Maasai landowners, limit vehicle numbers and allow night drives and walking safaris.
