White sand, coral reefs and colobus monkeys
Diani Beach runs for around seventeen kilometres along the Indian Ocean south of Mombasa, a sweep of fine white sand lined with palms and backed by coastal forest. A coral reef offshore keeps the water calm at low tide, and trips run to Kisite-Mpunguti Marine Park near Wasini Island for snorkelling with dolphins. The endangered Angolan colobus monkeys living in the forest are protected by the local Colobus Conservation project. Kitesurfing is popular when the monsoon winds blow, and Mombasa's Fort Jesus makes a good day trip.
