Nairobi

A capital with a national park on its edge

Nairobi is the starting point for most Kenyan safaris, and the only capital with a national park inside its limits: in Nairobi National Park, lions and black rhinos roam against a backdrop of office towers. The David Sheldrick Wildlife Trust cares for orphaned elephants, and the Giraffe Centre lets you meet endangered Rothschild's giraffes eye to eye. Karen Blixen's former farmhouse, the National Museum and the Kazuri bead workshops fill out a day, while Westlands and Kilimani have the city's restaurants and nightlife.
