Jeonju

Hanok lanes and the home of bibimbap

Jeonju was the ancestral home of the Joseon royal family, and its Hanok Village holds several hundred traditional houses, many now guesthouses, teahouses and craft workshops. Gyeonggijeon Shrine holds a portrait of the dynasty's founder, and the Jeondong Catholic Cathedral adds an elegant contrast. The city is famous for its bibimbap, as well as kongnamul gukbap, a bean-sprout soup that is a classic hangover cure. Try makgeolli houses, where each round of rice wine arrives with a spread of side dishes, and look out for hanji paper crafts.
