A village with canals instead of roads
Giethoorn, in the province of Overijssel, is a village where canals take the place of streets. Thatched-roof farmhouses sit on little islands linked by more than 170 wooden footbridges, and the main way to get around is by boat or on foot. Visitors rent quiet electric whisper boats or canoes to glide along the canals. The village lies at the edge of the Weerribben-Wieden National Park, a large wetland of reed beds and lakes that is excellent for paddling, birdwatching and cycling. Visit early in the day for a calmer experience.
