Burgundian food and cobbled squares in the south
Maastricht, tucked into the far south of the Netherlands, feels more like a Belgian or French town, with a Burgundian love of food and drink. The Vrijthof square is lined with cafés, and the Basilica of St Servatius dates back to early Christian times. A Gothic Dominican church has been turned into one of the world's most beautiful bookshops. Beneath the city, the St Pietersberg caves are a labyrinth of marl tunnels, and the surrounding hills of South Limburg are good for walking and cycling. The city gave its name to the 1992 Maastricht Treaty.
