A mountain railway down to the Sognefjord
Flåm is little more than a harbour and a handful of buildings, but it sits at the heart of the Sognefjord, Norway's longest and deepest fjord. The Flåm Railway drops from the mountain station at Myrdal past roaring waterfalls to sea level in about an hour, one of the steepest standard-gauge lines in the world. From the quay, boats glide through the narrow Nærøyfjord to Gudvangen, and the Stegastein viewing platform juts out high above the Aurlandsfjord nearby.
